Did you know that animated GIFs have been a part of the Internet since they were invented in 1987? Easier to make than videos, but more engaging than static images, GIF stands for Graphic Interchange Format and in 2015 over 100 million of them were shared on Twitter alone (and has only increased since then)! Much like emojis, they are becoming an extension of the way people communicate with others and express emotions in the digital world. Using animations and pulling from pop culture references, animated GIFs are easy to use and a great addition for people to communicate with more visuals.
Brands are constantly looking for new and innovative ways to connect with their audiences. Whether it’s branded podcasts, live-streaming, or the next new thing, in the ever-crowded digital world everyone on the Internet is vying for people’s time and attention. While many say that this year is the year of video, and it is, video can be more time-consuming to create and harder to gain attention for. Animated GIFs, on the other hand, can be more easily made and shared across platforms. Since GIFs are short and looping, they don’t ask for much of a user’s time, yet they draw attention because of their movement on the person’s newsfeed.
Whether it’s a fun way to draw in references from a TV show, communicate a feeling or relevant message, or just to say hi, between marketers and all Internet users, the popularity of animated GIFs will continue to increase! With the ease of searching for them on Twitter and in iMessage as well as the ability to copy and paste on Facebook, they will continue their rise. Who knows, maybe 2017 will turn out to be the year of the GIF?
