Smartify: Augmented Reality in Art Museums
There has truly never been a time that art has been so accessible as it is now. Whether you’re searching for art on Google or texting the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, art is literally at our fingertips. With a surge in augmented reality apps, Smartify helps deliver additional information about art while you’re at museums.
The app, which was released earlier this year, “uses image recognition to identify scanned artworks and provide people with additional information about them. Users can then add the works to their own digital collection” according to New Scientist.
What differentiates Smartify is that it is “intended to complement real-world visits to galleries and not just act as an online image database”. FastCo Design even refers to the app as “The Shazam for Art” because “all you have to do is aim your phone at it and you’ll get its name, a short blurb, and perhaps even an audio criticism to listen to”.
Information is more available than ever before, and it will only continue to increasingly aid in our lives with advancements in augmented reality. While looking at art in museums, you can easily view anything and everything you’d need or want to know about art.
